2011 ROC National Art Exhibition

Historically public art exhibitions in Taiwan have served to carry on traditional practices while inspiring future developments in art. The 2011 ROC National Art Exhibition is organized by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA) under the direction of the Council for Cultural Affairs. The format of the exhibition is based on past exhibitions such as the Taiwan Provincial Fine Art Exhibition and the Taiwan Art Exhibition.

Entries were collated using an open submission process in ten categories: oil painting, watercolour, printmaking, ink and wash painting, gouache painting, Chinese calligraphy, seal carving, sculpture, photography and 'new media art'. Our hope has been two-fold: first, to exhibit both traditional and 'avant-garde' works in equal measure and showcase the rich diversity of contemporary art in Taiwan; and second, to nurture artistic talent and promote art in the public domain through the competitive, prize-giving and exhibitive aspects of the exhibition.

A total of 1,894 works of art across the ten categories were submitted during the submission period, which ran from September 15, 2010 to December 30, 2010. For each category, respected artists and academics were invited to form judging panels to review the submissions and vote on prize winners using a two-round voting system. In each category, gold, silver and bronze prizes were awarded to the top three entries and a number of other works were conferred 'selected' status. In all 140 works were awarded and these works will be publicly exhibited at the museum from July 25, 2011 to August 28, 2011.

This is the first ROC National Art Exhibition to be organized by the TNMFA and going forward the exhibition will be held yearly. It is fitting that the first exhibition is being held on the ROC's centenary. As a public exhibition, it will allow home-grown artists a platform to shine and will give a boost to their work.

It is our sincere hope that as time goes on the ROC National Art Exhibition will be able to play a major role in promoting and supporting art and art education, as well as help bring more talented artists to the fore and spur development in art.
